What an epic start to the weekend, short trip over the pennines to Leeds Arena to see Simple Minds for the first time since lockdown. The last time I saw them was at London’s Roundhouse where there was an interview with the band on stage during the interval. The trip there was frantic as per usual when I use public transport, Del Amitri were still on stage when i made it to the foyer, as i was Photographing the first 3 songs I waited with the other Photographers.
To my surprise I was told there would be a Photo pit at the front, which is rare for an all seated gig. I was buzzing. Simple Minds walked on stage and soon after Jim Kerr greeted Leeds, Ged Grimes started one of the most famous bass lines in music, n n-n n-n n-n n-n……… I’m not sure if I’ve ever been to a Simple Minds gig that didn’t start with Waterfront.
Love Song and The American followed after that before being led out to reception to deposit my gear and find my seat. I was actually gutted that Premonition was the song I left the arena to, one of my all time favourites. Found my seat via a trip to the bar……£8.50 for a pint of Neck Oil……..that is piss poor and the most expensive pint I have ever bought by a long shot.
Hypnotised, Promised You a Miracle, New Gold Dream, Belfast Child, Glittering Prize and Once Upon a Time were my major memories of this gig. Sadly I had to leave during Someone, Somewhere in Summertime. One of the worst bits of having to travel from Manchester but always worth it as the Leeds Arena is so superior to the AO Arena in Manchester.
Take Aways from the show…….Possibly the best Simple Minds gig I have ever been to, the seat was perfect, Jim Kerr was impeccable and in good humour. I never thought I’d be able to deal with Mel Gaynors contribution to the sound being missing but Cherisse Osei is a superb Drummer even after being bloated by a Sticky Toffee Pudding as Jim Kerr let us know, her drum solo was amazing and the way she stands at times whilst performing which reminds me of Danny Dolan from The Virginmarys.
Great night out, I always enjoy Simple Minds and it was a real downer having to leave the show early. Enjoy the pics below……
