BLACK HONEY, GORILLA, MANCHESTER 4/4/2023

Brighton is home to so much great music right now and BLACK HONEY are right up there at the top of their game. Their new album A FISTFUL OF PEACHES charted at number 6 in the UK charts and reached the top spot in the Indie chart, and while it hasn’t wholly grabbed me like their other two albums did I was pleasantly surprised with the live versions, especially I’M A MAN, CUT THE CORD and UP AGAINST IT.

The set began with CHARLIE BRONSON, ALL MY PRIDE, TOMBSTONE and BEACHES but the show really started when IZZY broke slowly into SPINNING WHEEL. Her voice was perfectly haunting as the crowd cleared a huge area of the floor, she then let out her war cry and all hell broke loose in the first of the nights many mosh pits.

The only song that fell a bit flat for me was SOMEBODY BETTER, the verse sounded a bit out of tune at first but once the chorus kicked in everything fell into place, ALEX’s drumming was the highlight on this track, relentless. Probably an unpopular opinion but my least favourite song of theirs is DISINFECT, however it is totally awesome live and easily produced the heaviest moshing of the night, this may also have been when IZZY shook and opened a beer can, drank some, poured the rest over her head and messed her hair up in a frenzy, just wonderful. I was so glad they played MIDNIGHT, absolutely love this song, everyone was dancing to this one.

Maximum effort from the entire band that night, CHRIS and TOMMY not only guitar well together but their backing vocals are integral to the full performance and this was definitely the tightest I’ve seen them all play together. IZZY went full on rock n roll during RUN FOR COVER as she threw herself onto the crowd, simultaneously singing and surfing the room without dropping a note. The final song was CORINNE and all the women and non-binary were invited to stand front and centre, as they commenced moshing IZZY joined them, singing and moshing amongst them until the very end. It was an epic night in Manchester and if you haven’t seen this band live yet…. What are you waiting for?, you won’t regret it.
