Satan’s Hollow is a quirky little venue in Manchester, complete with stained glass windows and glitter ball above the stage in the centre of the floor where the bands are surrounded by their adoring fans and also watched over by Satan himself. The only downside is that it is an early start for the bands so we always miss the opening act which on Friday was Stormrider.
Headliners Power Quest came to the stage and the floor erupted. This power metal band has been evolving since Steve on keyboards formed it in 2001 and after splitting in 2013 they are back with a new line up which is outstanding. Vocalist Ashley, whom I first saw in his other band Dendera, only joined in 2016 but takes on all the older songs and makes them his own with a voice to rival Bruce Dickinson himself and hints of Adam Lambert in the way he can hold those melodic power notes for so long. His brother Bradley looks cool on bass and is joined at the front by George and Glyn on guitars who also excel at the long haired headbanging we come to expect from a metal band.
Rich on drums is no wallflower at the back, tattooed and topless he thrashes those drums with all his might and throws his cheeky personality in to the show. The band play a great set, new and old songs, and the crowd are obviously a loyal one, singing all the tracks and having a truly awesome night. As they return for an encore Ashley damns the crowd for being too loud because if they weren’t loud enough he was going to get a kebab instead. They play a few more tracks and then retreat to the merch corner where the bands usually welcome fans to come and chat as well as buy stuff. If you like your metal bands to come with a tune as well as the heavy sound then go and check these guys out next time they tour. Cracking show.
